How One Small New York Neighborhood is
Bringing Experiential Retail to Life
Ten Blocks in Brooklyn:
November 6, 2019 | Brooklyn, New York
Learning from Local Retailers Who have Mastered Millennial Expectations
A hot sauce shop staffs sommeliers; a skate shop hosts art exhibits; a record shop doubles as a concert venue; a shoe boutique carries only shoes expressly suited for the rigors of a life spent pounding the pavement. The tiny neighborhood of Williamsburg, in the heart of Brooklyn, has become a veritable Petri dish of experiential retail outposts.
Retailers of every size and in every vertical can learn from these experiences. Which is exactly what we intend to do during our upcoming Thinking Retail Forum New York. Join us on November 6, 2019 at the historic Wythe Hotel for a series of interactive and educational sessions designed to examine the critical challenges retail executives face as they attempt to adapt their assortments and their experiences to meet the demands of the Experience Era.

Being customer-centric in a highly experiential model presents significant challenges. Columbus Consulting Managing Partner Kate Gorman will discuss how she has helped retailers overcome many of these challenges, including attempting to build a merchandise plan 18 months in advance, when customer experiences are not yet defined. She will share best practices for making customer-based decisions in-season with product you have, and she will share her advice for managing through ever-changing experiences that are shifting behaviors online and off.
Three of Aptos’ senior Assortment Planning consultants will form a powerhouse panel of experts prepared to share stories from their assortment planning work around the globe. These three road warriors have met with the planning teams of close to 100 retailers in the past year, so they have a rich database of experiences to share. This session is sure to be full of insights into how – and how aggressively – retailers in every corner of the industry are investing in customer-centric assortment initiatives that support experiential strategies.
As customers demand more options and more flexibility for order fulfillment, effectively managing inventory becomes an increasingly important art of every shopping experience. During this informative session, Peter will share critical steps retailers can take to forecast and replenish the right stock across channels to deliver a consistent experience no matter the point of interaction – or the point of fulfillment.
From inventory forecasting to shopping support, Artificial Intelligence is beginning to impact much of the retail enterprise. Aptos Product Director Nick Leeper will take an in-depth look at how leading retailers are investing in AI & Machine Learning to help them deliver optimized shopping journeys that enrich every experience.
With over 350 planning clients in dozens of countries around the world, the Aptos client base represents a rich library of lessons to be shared and learned. Join this panel of Aptos planning experts as they share lessons learned and best practices from several international Aptos planning clients that are thriving in the age of experiences.
Join Laura Davis-Taylor and Ed King, Co-Founders of HighStreet Collective, on a guided tour of several Brooklyn retail outposts in a neighborhood that seems to have cracked the code on experiential retail. During this 90-minute tour of Williamsburg (bring comfortable shoes!), Laura and Ed will lead this intriguing and highly educational tour of neighborhood stores, where each stop on will bring a unique aspect of experiential retail to life, from highly curated assortments to multi-use event spaces and everything in between.
Perry Kramer, Senior Vice President for Boston Retail Partners, will share new shopper insights from the rich BRP research library. Perry will explore emerging shopper expectations and dig into exactly what people want from their retail store experiences. This insightful session will help set the stage for the remaining afternoon sessions that will examine specific strategies for satisfying these emerging shopper expectations.
As shoppers expect more compelling experiences from their store visits, retailers face daunting new questions: What is the right size of the store? How do I decide how to reallocate square footage to fulfillment, entertainment and education functions. Should I even try to reallocate? These are risky decisions no matter how many stores are involved, and Nikki Baird, Vice President of Innovation for Aptos, will share examples and expert advice to help retailers answer these challenging questions.
As the experience economy continues to expand, so do opportunities for retailers to take their brands where their customers gather. Not only via strategically planned pop-ups shops, but also via empowering stores to bring their brands where their local communities gather. Aptos Solution Principal Mike Hughes will discuss the opportunities inherent in these ad-hoc pop-up shops, specific steps to consider when popping up stores, and examples of retailers who have mastered the art of taking their stores to the streets.
Aptos VP of Innovation Nikki Baird will interview a local Brooklyn retailer who has found a way to meet shopper expectations for compelling experiences that engage their community and drive store visits (and fuel sales).
